Clicklaw is a site that aims to be a unified, trustworthy point of access on the Internet to diverse sources of quality legal information, education and help in British Columbia.
The Clicklaw Project in a Nutshell
The Clicklaw Project in a Nutshell, Mar 2009 (PDF, 330KB) provides an overview of the project in an FAQ format.
Should you prefer visuals, the slideshow embedded here includes the who, why, what, and how of the Clicklaw project.
If you viewed the above slideshow, you’ll want to have a look at this one as well. It shows a subsequent version of the Clicklaw wireframe prototype, which is a barebones representation of how the site is organized and what a visitor can do on the site:
What is the vision for Clicklaw?
Clicklaw aims to be a unified, trustworthy point of access on the Internet to diverse sources of quality legal information, education and help in British Columbia. The site will allow visitors – members of the public in BC, those who help people with legal problems, as well as educators and students – to search across and link into legal information, education and law-related help from a range of websites. Learn more about the context for the initiative from our project background page.
Who is sponsoring the project?
The project is sponsored by the Public Legal Education and Information Working Group, on behalf of the PLEI Network, an informal body of organizations in British Columbia that provide or support public legal education and information.
The Courthouse Libraries BC is acting as the lead for the project.
The project is funded by the Law Foundation of BC.
What are the objectives of Clicklaw?
The high level objectives of Clicklaw are:
- To improve access to public legal education and information: Clicklaw will help visitors locate and access PLEI content by providing current search and browse capabilities, enabling them to locate offerings by their choice of legal issue, type of resource, type of format, and so on.
- To improve the effectiveness of access to PLEI content: By providing one-stop access to high quality PLEI content, Clicklaw will help visitors locate reliable, authoritative, and current PLEI resources.
- To help identify gaps in PLEI programming: Creating a unified entry point for PLEI content across BC will help expose gaps in PLEI content to specific target groups, for specific legal issues, and so on.
- To improve coordination among PLEI Network organizations and the broader PLEI community in BC: Creating a shared resource will help PLEI Network organizations and others in the BC PLEI community coordinate their activities and programming to a greater extent.

I am very big on defining EVERY term that appears in print in order to avoid confusion, and that would include the “PLEI” acronym in “PLEI Portal Project”. Nowhere do I see it explained as the “Public Legal Education and Information” project. I propose that this be added to the right hand side definition. Cheers!
