- Confronting Racism in the Criminal Justice System (Webinar)
by Continuing Legal Education Society of BC (CLEBC)- What: Systemic racism is deeply embedded in civil society and in our governing structures. In this full-day course, CLEBC will walk through where, when and how systemic racism, unconscious and conscious bias, micro-aggressions and white privilege exist at each stage of the criminal justice system – from policing to charge assessment, in the bail process, in trials and at sentencing. We will explore how this impacts decisions and proceedings and the ways we can interrupt negative outcomes.

- No One Left Behind: Reflections on Human Rights and Civil Liberties During the Covid-19 Pandemic (Livestream)
by BC Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA)- What: Over the past year, the BCCLA collaborated with or supported the work of various individuals and organizations to ensure no one was left behind in Canada’s public health response. We’ve organized a panel to highlight that work and give the panelists a chance to reflect on the impact of the pandemic on some of the most important human rights and civil liberties issues affecting vulnerable and oppressed people across Canada, particularly Black, Indigenous, and racialized communities.

by BC Ministry of Attorney General and Courthouse Libraries BC- What: Join us for a 1.5-hour webinar exploring questions and concerns you and your clients may have around the implementation of the new BC Provincial Court Family Rules (PCFR). The Rules took effect on May 17, 2021, with significant changes made to processes and forms. This is an introductory-level and practical focused webinar aimed at intermediaries (advocates, librarians, and community workers) and general practitioner lawyers.

- Alone: The Prolonged and Repeated Isolation of Youth in Custody Report (Webinar)
by Ombudsperson of British Columbia- What: This report details the results of a three-year investigation into the use of separate confinement in B.C.’s two youth correctional centres in Prince George and Burnaby, from 2017 to 2019. The report finds the use of separate confinement in B.C.’s youth custody centres is unjust, unsafe and disproportionately impacts Indigenous youth. The Ombudsperson calls for changes to the province’s youth custody laws and practices to set a maximum of 22 hours on separate confinement, treat youth more humanely and strengthen oversight.
