    • What: The Land Owner Transparency Act (LOTA), introduced on November 30, 2020, requires the owner, certain transferees, and “interest holders” to file a transparency declaration with the Land Owner Transparency Registry. Under the Act, failing to file and filing “false or misleading information” are offences that carry significant financial penalties.

  • Achieving Digital Equity in a Post-Digital Era: Meeting the Challenge – Part 1 (Webinar)

    • What: Legal Aid BC’s Achieving Digital Equity (ADE) is a year-long research project funded by the LABC/Law Foundation Legal Research Fund. It examines the barriers to access and use of digital resources by lower income BC residents. The study explores digital issues and challenges, how many are affected, and what can be done to ensure people can access the services they need, even if they can’t go online. This is the first of two sessions.

  • “But I Look Like a Lawyer” Documentary (Film screening & virtual fireside chat)

    • What: FACL BC invites all members of the legal community, from law students to senior members of the bar and judiciary, to the premiere launch of our mini-documentary, “But I Look Like a Lawyer.” This documentary will share stories of the discrimination, stereotyping and bias experienced by members of the Pan-Asian legal community. It aims to increase intercultural awareness and competency, and to surface the complexity of the history, socio-economic and colonial aspects of these real lived experiences. Following the documentary showcase, we will host a virtual fireside chat with leaders in the Pan-Asian legal community.

  • Re-Envisioning PLEI: A Workshop (Online meeting)
    by West Coast LEAF
    • What: This 90-minute interactive workshop will explore strategies for public legal education and information (PLEI) that align with social justice values and aims. Legal educators, teachers, advocates, frontline service providers, lawyers, and anyone else who facilitates learning about laws and the legal system are welcome to join our interactive discussion. We will touch on the range of potential impacts of PLEI—both liberatory and harmful—and look at wise and ethical practices for PLEI practitioners that were shared by West Coast LEAF’s community as part of our Re-Envisioning Public Legal Education and Information project. Topics will include community-led, learner-engaged, and relationship-centred PLEI; honest and critical perspectives on the law; and dismantling barriers to participation. The workshop will be facilitated by Cecile Afable (she/her) and Alana Prochuk (she/her/they/them) of West Coast LEAF, a non-profit organization that uses legal strategies to challenge gender-based discrimination and advance equality and justice.
