About Mediation – Two new short films added to the Mediation Stories section of the website. They showcase true stories of people who went to mediation to resolve their separation/divorce family law conflict. Use this to help the public see the potential of collaborative dispute resolution. People’s Law School

Time Off Work – Practical guidance on the legal aspects of taking time off work. Learn your rights and obligations when taking sick days, taking a vacation, and taking other leaves of absence (e.g. personal days off, family responsibility leave, maternity leave, compassionate care leave, bereavement leave, parental leave, pregnancy leave).

West Coast LEAF

Pathways in a Forest: Indigenous guidance on prevention-based child welfare – A report highlighting efforts by Indigenous families, communities, and Nations to revitalize Indigenous approaches to child welfare, develop community-based supports, and fight for self-determination. It centres the voices of 64 caregivers who share their stories of fighting to keep their children out of care. This report is an outcome of a year-long law reform project by West Coast LEAF in collaboration with the Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre (FRAFCA), Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Children and Family Services (LMO), and Tillicum Lelum Friendship Centre called Putting Families First: Shifting the Child Protection System.

Migrant Workers Centre

New legal help services:

Respect at Work Hotline & Legal Clinics – Free legal information & advice to newcomers to Canada who have faced or are facing sexual harassment in the workplace. Referrals to employment and settlement services including emotional support and counseling. Clinics are held at ISS of BC offices in the Lower Mainland.

Legal Advocacy – legal advocates and staff lawyer providing free (pro bono) legal advocacy services to caregivers and other migrant workers.

Gladue Submission Guide
This new, plain language booklet for Aboriginal peoples explains how to prepare a Gladue submission to help the judge decide bail or sentencing. Includes a Gladue factors checklist and a worksheet to help Aboriginal peoples, lawyers, and Native courtworkers gather information needed to prepare a submission.
Your Gladue Rights
This revised booklet explains Gladue rights, rights under the Criminal Code that apply to anyone who identifies as Aboriginal. Gladue rights can apply at bail and sentencing hearings.
Sponsorship Breakdown
This updated booklet is for permanent residents who need help when the person sponsoring them in Canada is no longer supporting them.

This updated booklet is for service providers assisting “mothers without status”. It now has new content on MCFD and has been updated for immigration and Family Law Act changes.

Financing Litigation Legal Research Project

The paper reviews six financing models to pay for litigation: unbundled legal services, third-party litigation funding, alternative fee arrangements, crowdfunding, legal expense insurance, and publicly funded litigation funds. It also discusses 18 ideas on how to enhance the use of each model.
